Subletting Your Apartment

The summer is an excellent time to sublet your apartment. If you're going on vacation for a week, a month, or the entire summer, what about subletting while you're away...

DVD Sunday: Semi Pro

Posted on May 30, 2008

Right now, Will Ferrell is the World's Greatest Comedian and he's ripe for a fall. His latest movie, Semi Pro (2008) -- although it's not as awful as everyone says it is -- is a sign that Farrell is poised to join this list of other one-time World's Greatest Comedians and now brutally, brutally unfunny men: Adam Sandler, Mike Myers, Jim Carey, and Eddie Murphy.

Let's get this out of the way: Ferrell plays Jackie Moon, the owner/coach/player of a struggling ABA team, the Flint Tropics. Supporting is Woody Harrelson, in the role of Monix, who is basically playing a really serious version of his character from the movie Kingpin, and Andre Benjamin -- the guy from Outkast who apparently acts -- as Clarence "Coffee" Black. It's the standard sports misfits-must-band-together-to-save-the-team movie but it's set in the 1970s, because everything is funnier in the 1970s.

[My Weekender] with DEECEE

Posted on May 29, 2008

David "DEECEE" Cade wears many hats: Chief Creative Ambassador of Worldwide Cocktail & Club Culture, international cocktail bartender and mixologist, freelance writer, DJ and vinyl collector, radio host and MC, entertainer, performer, world traveler, and "fun seeker."

Being the freelancing, fun-loving spirit that I am, chances are quite good that any day of the week could signify either the ending or the beginning of my weekend. But... supposing I actually begin my weekend on the actual weekend, this is a likely scenario:

I wake up with a heavy head to a typical Friday morning in Shanghai, the energy is in the air with the feeling of millions of people cramming to finish up their work week and join that 4:30pm rush to Friday night.

Sticking Your Hair Where It Doesn’t Belong

Posted on May 28, 2008

If pig hair covered guns, boots and bandanas aren't enough to fluster your feminine side, how about a half-crazed artist blasting through Zendai Plaza in a car sprouting black boar bristles?

Wu Gaozhong got behind the wheel of one of his brutish sculptures at Zendai MoMA on Tuesday. Opening his biggest solo show to date with a grandiose cruise through an outdoor Pudong shopping mall, the artist then parked the vehicle outside the museum entrance where it now rests safely.

For Those About to Rock

Posted on May 27, 2008

We're gearing up for a big weekend of live music in Shanghai -- and then an even bigger month -- because June sees pretty much every band in China performing in Shanghai. As you very well know, Windows Tembo is picking up stakes and moving a block north and a couple blocks east on Nanjing Lu to a larger basement space with increased capacity, increased stage size, and a better sound system (698 Nanjing W Lu, near Wujiang Lu).

Humane Mouse Traps

Even though mice can carry disease and are one of the least unwelcome house guests (I'd take roaches over a mouse any day), they're still furry and a noninsect and...

A Little Shelter

Posted on May 26, 2008

Like an oasis in the desert, a good caf¨¦ in Shanghai should provide shelter and indulgence. I spent Monday afternoon hunting down such a rumored oasis, GZ Caf¨¦, located in the alley between Nanjing Xi Lu and Weihai Lu, across from the Isetan side entrance. While the general locale is much traveled by both locals and foreigners, GZ is one of those elusive spots that cannot be stumbled upon, only searched out by those in the know. Apparently, no one is really in the know yet, as I was the only customer throughout my hour long stay during the lunch rush. Question is, even if more people are informed about this place, should it be sought out? That depends on whether you are looking for shelter or indulgence. It offers the former but is lacking in the latter.

Wine Mall’ed

Posted on May 25, 2008

If you head west on Wuzhong Lu and go far enough you will eventually come across an officious looking government building on your right. Ignore this menacing structure and continue on the lookout for Shanghai's largest wine shop.

The Wine Mall doesn't sell the biggest amount of wine in Shanghai, nor does it have the widest selection available. At 18,000 square meters this is the largest wine shop in Shanghai, physically speaking. Impressive seeing as all that space is dedicated to the sale and distribution of fermented juice.
